What to Know About In-Home Sessions

“If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.”

This quote from Mother Teresa beautifully expresses the beauty and sanctity, and power of home. This ethos and the feeling it embodies perfectly explains why in-home sessions capture the essence of your family’s love, connection and ease with each other.

Here’s what to know about in-home sessions and the beautiful experience they provide.

Why Choose an In-Home Session?

Home is where your little one curls up in your lap for story time, where giggles echo down the hall, and where you feel most like yourself. It’s comfortable, lived-in, and filled with all of the details and memories that make up your family’s world.

If the thought of a traditional session feels overwhelming— getting everyone out the door, and hoping the kids are in the mood—you may find an in-home session to be the perfect experience. It’s natural, and an opportunity to document your family’s story exactly as it is, in the place you love most.

While outdoor and studio sessions are beautiful, in-home sessions allow for a deeply personal and relaxed experience.

Comfort & Connection – Your home is the heart of your family’s story.  It’s a beautiful place to capture authentic moments of connection in the space where you feel the most at ease.

Ease & Convenience – No need to pack up the kids, worry about snacks or forgotten shoes, or stress about making it somewhere on time. You have the luxury of getting ready at your own pace, and the kids can play freely until we start.

Perfect for Little Ones – If little ones need a break, they can escape to their room to play, while we focus on other family And for newborn sessions, you won’t have to juggle diaper bags, feeding schedules, or car rides; I come to you.

No Need for Perfection – Your home doesn’t need to look like a magazine spread. A quick clean-up of key spaces (which we’ll identify in our planning meeting) is enough. If needed, a laundry basket in the closet does wonders!

One of my favorite moments during an in-home session?

During our planning meeting, a Mother shared that her husband loved playing guitar with their toddler, and it was one of their favorite ways to connect as a family. Midway through their session, as their little one got restless, The family sat on the bed, Dad grabbed his guitar and they strummed the guitar together. Their little boy relaxed and Mom & Dad were all smiles. It was the sweetest moment of connection—one that simply couldn’t have been recreated in a studio.

Preparing Your Home

Worried your home isn’t “Pinterest-perfect”? It doesn’t need to be. The focus isn’t on showcasing how beautiful your house is, it’s about capturing the comfort, connection, and love you share within it.

Simple ways to prepare your space:

Declutter key areas – A quick tidy of spaces with the best light (which we’ll determine in our planning meeting) is all that’s needed. The rest? Don’t worry about it!

Curate, don’t perfect – Remove distractions, but keep meaningful items—family heirlooms, cozy blankets, or your child’s favorite stuffed animal.

Incorporate an activity you love – Whether it’s baking cookies, playing a board game, painting your daughter’s nails or running barefoot in the yard, activities make for natural, joyful images.

What to Wear for an In-Home Session

Wardrobe choices for in-home sessions should feel effortless and natural, complementing both your personal style and the setting.

Soft, neutral colors – Creams, tans, soft blues, pale greens, and blush tones photograph beautifully indoors.

Comfortable, timeless pieces

  • For mom: Flowy dresses, knit sets, linen ensembles, or denim with a relaxed cardigan.
  • For dad: Linen pants, khakis, denim, or a breezy button-down.
  • For little ones: Soft rompers, simple dresses, or cozy knitwear.

One small change for in-home sessions? Go barefoot! It enhances the natural, at-home feel of your portraits.

How an In-Home Session Flows

I always ease into the session with a full-family portrait—everyone together in a cozy, relaxed pose. For a Family Session, we move into natural prompts that encourage connection, play, and movement.

My favorite moments to capture?

  • A child’s tiny hands reaching for yours.
  • A knowing smile exchanged between parents as their little one cuddles close.
  • The playful chaos of little feet running through the hallway.
  • Laughter as you pile onto the couch together.

I’m sure these will become your favorites too!

After the Session: Choosing Your Portraits & Artwork

Once your session is complete, I carefully hand-edit your portraits. Then, you’ll have a two-day period to review your full gallery online and select the images you love most.

I’ll guide you through options for displaying your portraits—whether that’s framed fine art prints for your walls or a custom heirloom album to hold in your hands.

Why print your in-home portraits?

Home is where we love, grow, and create lifelong memories. Displaying these portraits in your space reminds your children daily of the love that surrounds them.
