If your goal is simply cooler weather after a hot summer, early October can be a beautiful time for portraits. While it can still feel a bit like summer here, temperatures are usually much more comfortable, making it a wonderful option for families who aren’t necessarily looking for a traditional fall look.

If there’s one question that comes up during almost every Coffee Consult, it’s, “What should we wear?”

I always recommend beginning with Mom’s outfit first, then building the rest of the family’s wardrobe around it. Once you’ve found something you truly love wearing, coordinating everyone else becomes much simpler.

One of the things I love most about fall in Coastal Virginia is that our weather is usually much milder than people expect. Fall in Virginia Beach tends to stay fairly mild well into November (Just a few years ago it was 73 on Thanksgiving).

Instead of worrying about staying warm, I encourage you to think of the season as an opportunity to wear pieces that simply aren’t comfortable during the summer months. Cozy sweaters, textured knits, lightweight jackets, and layered outfits add warmth, depth, and character while allowing everyone to stay comfortable and look elegantly cozy.

One concern I hear from nearly every mother has very little to do with the weather or wardrobe.
