One of the biggest concerns I hear is that mothers feel like they should wait before scheduling photographs. They want to lose the baby weight, get their hair done, update their wardrobe, or find the perfect dress first.

The truth is, most of what makes a mother feel confident in her portraits has very little to do with perfection and everything to do with feeling comfortable, beautiful, and like herself. That’s why styling support is such an important part of the Mary Eleanor Photography experience.

What Makes a Dress Photograph Beautifully?

Before we talk about specific brands, it’s helpful to understand what I’m actually looking for when recommending wardrobe pieces.

The dresses that photograph beautifully aren’t necessarily the most formal or elaborate. More often, they’re the pieces that allow you to move comfortably, feel confident, and fit naturally into the setting.

Movement Matters

One of the reasons I recommend dresses so often is because they add movement to photographs.

Whether you’re walking along the shoreline, holding your little one, or simply turning toward your family, movement creates dimension and softness within an image. Fabrics that move naturally help create an effortless elegance without looking overly styled or formal.

Natural fabrics like cotton, linen, and soft blends tend to photograph beautifully because they move naturally and don’t feel overly structured.

One of the best pieces of styling advice I can offer is to choose clothing that feels like an elevated version of yourself.

My Favorite Dress Brands for Moms

These are the brands I find myself recommending most often because they consistently create beautiful photographs while helping mothers feel comfortable and confident.

DÔEN

If I had to choose one brand that most closely reflects the aesthetic I love for portraits, it would be DÔEN.

Styling the Whole Family Around Mom’s Outfit

One of the biggest styling tips I give mothers is simple: Start with your outfit first.

Mothers are often the hardest person in the family to dress because they’re balancing comfort, confidence, practicality, and personal style all at the same time.

It’s also common for mothers to put themselves last. They spend time finding outfits for the children, helping their spouse choose something to wear, and then try to figure out their own outfit at the very end.

Instead, I encourage mothers to choose something they genuinely love and build the family palette around it.

Once Mom’s outfit is selected, coordinating everyone else becomes much easier. Colors, textures, and overall styling tend to fall into place naturally.

A Few Things I Gently Steer Mothers Away From

While there aren’t many hard rules when it comes to wardrobe, there are a few things I typically recommend avoiding.

Everyone Wearing the Same Color

Coordinating and matching are two different things.

A cohesive color palette creates depth and visual interest. Everyone wearing the exact same color often feels less natural and can make photographs look dated more quickly.

Large Logos and Athletic Wear

Large logos tend to draw attention away from the people in the photograph.

Athletic wear and performance fabrics can also feel disconnected from the overall look most families are hoping to achieve during a portrait session.

Overly Trendy Pieces

Trends come and go.

When possible, I encourage mothers to choose pieces that feel timeless and reflective of their personal style rather than something that may feel dated a few years from now.

Bright Neon Colors

Very bright colors can become visually distracting and often pull attention away from the connection happening within the image.

Athletic Shoes

This is especially true for dads and boys.

Footwear is often overlooked during outfit planning, but athletic shoes can dramatically change the overall feel of an outfit. A simple loafer, sandal, boot, or casual leather shoe usually photographs much more naturally. Going barefoot is also perfect for In-home or Beach sessions.
